Subject and Goals
The Centro Studi e Ricerche Santa Giacinta Marescotti di Vignanello presents the Special Principe Francesco Maria Ruspoli Career Award reserved for the 2009-2017 Principe Ruspoli Baroque Music Competition Winners and Special Mentions, and the Special Musicological Studies Career Award to Ursula and Warren Kirkendale, on the 10th Anniversary of the Principe Francesco Maria Ruspoli International Competition, with the following goals:
a) honouring the memory of Prince Francesco Maria Ruspoli, leading personality of Roman Baroque and great patron of artists such as Georg Friedrich Handel, Jacques Hotteterre “Le Romain”, Antonio Caldara, Benedetto Marcello and the poets of the Academy of Arcadia, by reviving his patronage and passion for arts and music;
b) recovering and expressing the genius loci as represented by the music of the Baroque period, which embodied the identity of Vignanello and Castello Ruspoli during the years of Prince Francesco Maria; he made his own household one of the most prestigious cultural centres of the day, alongside other European courts;
c) favouring the launching of young talents in the field of historically informed performance of music of the Baroque period (17th and 18th cent.), and giving them the opportunity to relive the atmosphere of Castello Ruspoli, where many prominent artistic events took place;
d) covering several different musical fields and alternating singing with instrumental music, as well as testing new modern technical approaches;
e) promoting research and discussion in the field of musicology, ranging from historical and archival research on patronage to the study of expressive languages, musical and iconographic sources, and musical instruments in the Baroque era (17th and 18th cent.).
Structure of the competition
The 2018 una tantum Special Principe Francesco Maria Ruspoli Career Award, on the 10th Anniversary of the Principe Francesco Maria Ruspoli International Competition consists of:
- One section reserved for the 2009-2017 Principe Ruspoli Baroque Music Competition Winners and Special Mentions;
- A special Musicological Studies Career Award to Ursula Kirkendale and Warren Kirkendale.
BAROQUE MUSIC CAREER AWARD
Article 1 – Participants
This una tantum award is reserved for the 2009-2017 Principe Ruspoli Baroque Music Competition Winners and Special Mentions.
Article 2 – Judges
The jury is composed of five members (one chairperson and four members), directly nominated by the Board of Directors of the Centro Studi and the Artistic Director of the Competition:

The jury names the Winner of the Career Award. Special Mentions may also be awarded.
Article 3 – Prize
3.1. The prize, consisting of a check for € 2000,00 (two thousand euros) will be awarded to the Winner at Castello Ruspoli of Vignanello on Sunday, 14 October 2018.
3.2. The Winner will then perform as a soloist in a Gala Concert during the Awards Ceremony (October 14), as per article 5. Other awardees may also be invited to perform in the Gala Concert, alongside the Winner. The Winner will also be invited to perform during the European Day of Early Music (21 March 2019, Copenhagen) and to take part in the next Latin American Itinerância Ruspoli (2019) produced by Associação Ruspoli. Other awardees may also be invited to perform at one or more events during 2018’s last months, or 2019.
Article 4 – Judges’ decisions
4.1. Judges’ decisions are final and may not be appealed.
4.2. The judges, according to their experience and competence, will name the Winner of the Career Award. Special Mentions may also be awarded. The jury will examine the publicly available information about artistic and professional profiles of the 2009-2017 Ruspoli Baroque Music Competition Winners and Special Mentions, in order to assess their achievements as musicians or singers in the field of ‘baroque’ music live performance and recording. The jury will also examine their professional activities in other fields of music performance, production, promotion, and related services. The judges will carefully consider any available factor (both general and specific) that could be relevant to their music career.
4.3. The Centro Studi will publish the results of the jury’s examination process by 6 July 2018.
Article 5 – Awards Concert
5.1. The Winner will then perform as a soloist in a Gala Concert during the Awards Ceremony (October 14), as per article 3.2. Other awardees may also be invited to perform in the Gala Concert, alongside the Winner.
5.2. The Winner and all the performing awardees will establish the program of the concert, under the supervision of the Artistic Director of the Competition, by the end of July 2018.5.3. The Centro Studi will provide a harpsichord and an accompanist if needed – or if none is available among the awardees.
Article 6 – The organisers decline all responsibility for damages to persons or things that may occur during the competition and the Awards Ceremony.
Article 7 – Awardees and accompanists will not be able to lay claim to any audio and/or video recordings shot during the Ceremony. They will be invited to sign a document authorizing the use of texts, pictures and recordings, which will become visible on the website of the Centro Studi in the section dedicated to the Award.
Article 8 – The Centro Studi Santa Giacinta Marescotti will cover Winner’s and Special Mentions’ accommodation and meal expenses; travel expenses and guests’ expenses will not be covered. Guests will be offered a discounted accommodation package by the award organisers.
Article 9 – As per article 10 of Italian law n. 675/96 regarding “personal data protection”, awardees are hereby informed that data collected by the Centro Studi is solely used for the purposes of this competition and ceremony, with any other use being excluded.
Article 10 – Acceptance of the award implies unreserved acceptance of these Conditions.
MUSICOLOGICAL STUDIES CAREER AWARD TO URSULA AND WARREN KIRKENDALE
Article 1 – Award
1.1 – The Centro Studi and the Scientific Board of the Principe Francesco Maria Ruspoli International Competition agreed to present an una tantum Special Career Award posthumously to Ursula Kirkendale (†2013) and to Warren Kirkendale, on the 10th anniversary of the Principe Ruspoli Competition, for their incomparable contribution to the music history of Italy and Rome. Ursula and Warren Kirkendale are among the most distinguished musicologists ever since the last decades of the past century. Notably, Ursula Kirkendale’s researches and publications about Handel, Caldara, and Francesco Maria Ruspoli, were a turning point for Roman music history. Before her work, almost nothing was known about the sojourn of Handel in Rome, nor about the fundamental importance of Francesco Maria Ruspoli for the history of music. Her Handelian output was finally gathered and translated by Giorgio Monari in the volume Georg Friedrich Händel, Francesco Maria Ruspoli e Roma, Libreria Musicale Italiana (LIM), Lucca 2017, which was issued thanks to the indefatigable, accurate, and empathetic editorial activity of Warren Kirkendale, the scrupulous administrator of the scholarly estate of his consort Ursula (†2013).
1.2 – Warren Kirkendale, also on behalf of his deceased wife Ursula, will receive the Musicological Studies Career Award during the Awards Ceremony in Castello Ruspoli, Vignanello, on 14 October, 2018.
Article 2 – Judges (Scientific Board)
2.1 – The Centro Studi Santa Giacinta Marescotti relies on a Scientific Board consisting of acknowledged experts in the fields of music and musicology, and participating in institutions and/or musical and cultural associations.

Article 3 – The organisers decline all responsibility for damages to persons or things that may occur during the Awards Ceremony.
Article 4 – The awardee will not be able to lay claim to any audio and/or video recordings shot during the Awards Ceremony.
